A video has surfaced of a Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) demanding a bribe from a driver.
In the viral video that has surfaced the MTTD officer, after checking the license of a private vehicle owner realised he had taken more passengers.
According to the MTTD officer, the driver’s insurance allowed him to carry only two people but was with three passengers.
The officer was later captured in the video demanding a bribe from the driver before he would be allowed to leave.
The MTTD Officer in the video stated, “License, your car how many people do you have to pick, you have to take two, your insurance covers two people, and you have taken three, pour libation and go, how much is that, 5 cedis”.
Many studies have named the Ghana Police Service as one of the most corrupt institutions in Ghana, even though they are mandated with enforcing law and order in the country.
Several police officers, especially those with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), have made it a habit to squeeze money from road users, especially commercial drivers.
And when motorists break the law and their cars are confiscated at the MTTD office, bribes have to be paid to get them released.
Meanwhile, some Ghanaians in the comment section under the post have shared their opinions saying, “How does insurance cover 2 people in a car with 5 seat capacity? Is the car not the item being insured? Can you insure half the car? Make it make sense”.
“That’s all. Bossu the police dey try. If they say they will be 100% strict, a lot of people can’t even move. Sometimes, it is just a harmless gesture”, another stated.
An X user also added, “Pour libation and you want to give him 5ghs. Can 5 cedis buy Schnapp?”.
One more user stated, “I don’t know why we Ghanaians don’t appreciate the Police, this thing for Yankee fit end u for jail if dem sey they will be going according to the laws plenty people won’t be able to drive our roads. just small tokens u dey video am, what if he had arrested them😏💔”.
