The Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, has emphatically stated that any Member of Parliament (MP) and Minister engaged in illegal mining activities (galamsey) will face the full force of the law.
He indicated that the President Mahama government is committed to fighting the galamsey menace, and will not spare anyone found culpable regardless of their political status.
“Anybody who is engaged in galamsey activities, whether you are a minister or an MP, you wouldn’t be spared, and President Mahama has made it very, very clear,” Muhammed stated.
He affirmed his responsibility, along with other ministers, to lead the fight against illegal mining and ensure that no one is above the law.
“As a minister responsible to lead this fight with other ministers we are not going to renege on that responsibility,” he stated.
He added that his ministry is also committed to deepening stakeholder consultations to fight the menace.
“What we are doing at the Ministry of Environment is that we are deepening the stakeholder engagements because you cannot fight it without engaging everybody. You need to engage the chiefs or traditional leaders, and that is why you need MMDCEs and also the Ministry of Local Government, which is the mother Ministry, to be playing a role,” Muhammed stated.
He highlighted the need to collaborate with the Ministry of Defence due to the security implications associated with illegal mining.
“We are engaging the Ministry of Defence because you know the security implication. Some of the people who are engaged in it are heavily armed, and you need some force,” he explained.
