President John Dramani Mahama has thrown a jab at former President Akufo-Addo during the swearing-in of Dr Johnson Asiama as Bank of Ghana governor.
According to President Mahama, one thing is for sure he is not going to ask the Bank of Ghana to print more money for him.
It will be recalled that the NDC minority caucus in parliament exposed Ernest Addison for printing huge sums of money which caused Ghana’s depreciation of the cedi, they accused the Central Bank of being a crime scene with Ghana’s debt rising from GHS120 billion in 2016 to GHS600 billion in 2022.
John Mahama noted that the lessons of the past remind Ghanaians of the dangers of fiscal recklessness and the lasting harm it can inflict on an economy.
John Maham further asserted that he is committed to ensuring that the Central Bank operate free from political interference guided solely by its mandate, this is a path to building a resilient economy.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed Governor of the Bank of Ghana, alongside the First Deputy Governor Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama and Zackariah Mumuni, President Mahama voiced his concerns about the Akufo-Addo administration’s approach in asking the BoG to print more money for his government.
John Mahama stated, “The lessons of the past remind us of the dangers of fiscal recklessness and the lasting harm it can inflict on an economy.
When the government result in unsustainable consumption expenditure finance by excessive and unregulated printing of money the consequences can be severe from spirally inflation erosion of incomes to driving millions into poverty”, he added.
President Mahama further added, “Such action not only weakens public confidence in financial institutions but also threatens long-term stability to safeguard our economy from these risks, we must hold responsible fiscal management.
As President, I am committed to ensuring that the Central Bank operate free from political interference guided solely by its mandate, this is a path to building a resilient economy.
One thing for sure, I’m not going to ask you to print more money, I encourage you to work closely with key Institutions including the Ministry of Finance, parliament and the finance industry while maintaining the independence your mandate requires”, he reiterated boldly.
