The Ghana Police Service has arrested one person during the re-run of the Council of State elections in the Ashanti Region.
The elections were rescheduled to today, Monday February 17, 2025 after violent altercations disrupted the sorting and counting of ballots at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council.
The Electoral Commission (EC) suspended the elections as the voting center was forcefully invaded by unknown assailants, who destroyed ballot boxes, and scattered voting materials.
The violence is said to have been caused by the unexpected defeat of National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Yaw Owusu Obimpeh, who was considered the favourite to win the election.
Supporters, reportedly aggrieved by the outcome, allegedly instigated the violence, demanding a review of the results.
Known Political figures, including the Former Minister For Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, Kingsley Nyarko, and Henry Kwabena Kokofu, have been denied entry because they do not have accreditation to the voting centre during the re-run.
The cause of the arrest and the identity of the person arrested remain unknown.
Security at the Prempeh Assembly hall has ben tight as they seek to prevent violent clashes which marred the main elections last week.
The police have stationed a water cannon and mounted barriers all around the voting center in a bid to ensure peace.
