Philemon Agyapong, the Assistant Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has revealed that no nurse has gone home following the presidency’s December 7 revocation.
A letter dated February 10, 2025, by the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah directed all Heads of government institutions to nullify all appointments made by the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration after December 7, 2024.
Julius Debrah wrote, “Consistent with Government pronouncement in relation to the near end of tenure appointments and recruitments, I wish to bring to your attention that all appointments and recruitments made in the Public Services of Ghana after 7th December 2024 are not in compliance with established good governance practices and principles”.
“Accordingly, all Heads of Government Institutions are hereby requested to take the necessary steps to annul any such appointments or recruitments”, the statement added.
According to the Assistant Public Relations Officer, the Chief of Staff’s directive has been explained by the Health Minister that recruited nurses who went through due process and obtained financial clearance would not be affected.
Speaking on JoyNews’ on Monday, February 24, 2025, Philemon Agyapong, “No nurse has gone home as we speak, What I’m aware is that the former administration gave financial clearance to 15,200 nurses and we are expecting 15,200 nurses to be posted within that period – that is spanning from August 2024 to December 31, 2024, I don’t know of any outside recruitment out of the 15,200”.
“I think we have cautioned the government on their directives, we were giving the advice let me put it that way, if nurses and midwives who are also youths of this country who have stayed home for four years to five years post training are laid off on the bases of the fact that their financial clearance process didn’t complete before a certain period it would be very unfair” he added.
Philemon Agyapong added, “The ministry has made us aware that they are going to stick to the directive that those who went through due process and were given finance clearance are not supposed to be sacked.
Almost all the people who are working have financial clearance to the best of my knowledge”.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, has stated the directive to revoke nurses and midwives recruited post-December 7 if carried upon will lead to a nationwide strike by nurses and midwives.
President of the Association, Perpetual Ofori Ampofo in an interview stated, “Any dismissal of those nurses and midwives will lead to a nationwide strike. There is a lot of tension in our fraternity, and you should be on our platforms, and we are saying that if they go ahead and suspend we will have no choice but to stand in solidarity with our colleagues. And solidarity means that if you are asking them to stay at home then we will all stay at home in solidarity with them”.
