Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has called for the institution’s next prayer meeting to be held in the chamber to exorcize the spirit of disorder among members of parliament.
According to the Speaker, he keeps wondering what is inside the members of parliament.
Speaking at a breakfast prayer meeting, he stated, “The next prayer meeting should be held on the floor of parliament, there may be something inside there that needs to be exorcised, but we will not take it for granted. We will get inside there and get it out.
Where I sit and these great men and women come to me in private the way they present themselves is different from what they do inside, and so I keep on thinking about what is inside there”, he added.
Speaker Bagbin added, “The great men and women of the gospel will testify that when they are in church, they behave differently, but in Parliament, what is inside there, If this is the culture of politics, then we really need God to descend and once again salvage us”.
He added that there is order when he is in the chair, but the situation changes when his deputies take over.
The speaker of parliament added, “Just last week when I handed over to my second deputy speaker, chaos erupted almost immediately. Members were on their feet, singing and shouting. I was in my office, unsure whether to rush back and take over, but I held back to avoid disrupting leadership”.
“I refrained from returning immediately because that would not demonstrate leadership. Instead, I chose to watch what unfolded and reflect on why this keeps happening.”
“There’s a reason why this country made the decision that the Speaker should not be a Member of Parliament. If the person presiding can vote, it creates bias, leading to disorder. That’s why deputies, when they take the chair, act the way they do”, he revealed.
