The Civil and Local Government Staff Association (CLOGSAG) are beginning a nationwide strike today after the John Mahama administration refused to heed their earlier warning to remove the appointment of Samuel Adom Botchway as the Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry.

According to CLOGSAG, Samuel Adom Botchway a politically exposed person is still at post despite reports suggesting John Mahama had bowed to pressure to reassign him.

Speaking in an interview Isaac Bampoe Addo stated, “We had information that on the 17th February, he went for budget hearing in the name of Birth and Death Registry, and we think this is not proper and we think the issue has to be re looked at”.

“Because we have stated clearly that Mr. Botchwey as a former DCE and as an activist of NDC cannot be the Registrar of Birth and Deaths, the Supreme Court is very clear you cannot do politics and become a Civil Servant”, he added.

Isaac Bampoe Addo further revealed their members have been dismissed over the years for veering into politics.

“Our members have been dismissed for veering into politics, about thirty for the past five years. So why should politicians with impunity come into the Civil Service and think it should be normal. We are resetting Ghana, all we are asking for Birth and Death Registry is a Civil Service institution and must be run as such,”

“We are asking all our members to sit in the house, we are about seventy thousand we are looking at Ghana and we want to reset Ghana and start fresh”, he added.

Meanwhile, Felix Kwakye Ofosu the Minister of State for Government Communications, has told the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) that President John Dramani Mahama acted correctly in the appointment of Samuel Adom Botchway as the Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry.

According to Felix Kwakye Ofosu, they are appealing to CLOGSAG to rescind their decision to go on strike.

In a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, February 19, Feliz Kwakye stated, “We believe that the president has acted correctly in the appointment of Mr. Adom Botchway, so we would appeal to CLOGSAG to rescind their decision to go on strike,”

“A strike action, we appreciate. It is one of the mechanisms they can use to drive home their demands… But in this particular instance, we do not believe that an efficient basis exists to go on strike because it will be unfair to the people of Ghana who pay the wages of all public officers, including members of CLOGSAG”, he added.
