A man identified as Derek Bower of New Tupton has been fined £3,000 equivalent to GHS48,000 over his noisy cockerel.
According to reports, the cockerel’s excessive crowing disturbed neighbors and despite notice, the noise continued, leading to legal action.
The information gathered revealed that North East Derbyshire District Council using specialist noise monitoring equipment revealed the cock within 50 minutes crowed 76 times from 5:53 am.
Derek Bower failed to comply with an abatement notice after an Environmental Health Officer visited the property and recorded the bird’s noise levels.
The Derby Magistrates’ Court on December 9, 2024, heard the case but Mr. Bower failed to appear.
Derek Bower was ordered to pay a £660 fine, £924 victim surcharge and £1,623.96 in court costs totaling £3,207.96.
However, it has been revealed the fine has not been paid by Derek Bower with the case being reported to the council’s legal team for further action.
One neighbour who spoke to the media stated, “A nuisance, a nightmare—early hours of the morning, crowing. And when you want to sleep at that time, you don’t need it, sometimes it’s all day. And I don’t think it’s right”.
Meanwhile, some Ghanaians have reacted to the news, saying, “If this law was in Ghana, I would have made money from it. Even in our estate too I can’t rest peacefully with this neighbour close to me”.
Another stated, “Hmmm come and hear the noise from a church at the back of my window. Always Hayaaa in the morning afternoon and night”.
