The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has condemned the increasing attacks on journalists by illegal miners, (galamsers).
They issued a statement of condemnation after a recent attack on journalists in Breman-Adomanya forest area of the Wassa Amenfi District in the Western Region.
“This brazen act of violence against media personnel who were simply performing their duty to inform the public is utterly unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest terms”.
Highlighting the destructive nature of illegal mining activities, the statement from the Ministry pointed out that, these operators destroy timber and cocoa trees, rubber farms, and pollute nearby water bodies.
“The attack underscores the pervasive and destructive nature of illegal mining activities in our country,” the statement added.
The Ministry reaffirmed government’s unwavering commitment to combating illegal mining and protecting natural resources.
The Ministry called for concerted efforts from all stakeholders, including government agencies, traditional leaders, local communities, and the media, to address this national crisis. Commending the bravery and dedication of the journalists, the Ministry asserted, “Their work is critical in holding perpetrators accountable and ensuring that the public remains informed about the challenges we face in safeguarding our natural heritage.”
To the perpetrators of the attack, the Ministry issued a clear warning that the government will not tolerate such lawlessness and will work closely with security agencies to ensure those responsible are apprehended and face the full rigors of the law.
The statement concluded with a call to all Ghanaians to unite in the fight against illegal mining.
“We must protect our environment, our livelihoods, and our future. Together, we can restore the integrity of our lands and ensure that our natural resources benefit all citizens, not just a few selfish individuals”.
