Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the Minority Chief Whip has revealed it would be unfair for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to jettison Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for another flagbearer.
According to Annoh Dompreh, no presidential candidate of the NPP has won at the first instance of contesting as president on the ticket of the NPP in the fourth republic.
He revealed that he respect Kennedy Agyepong but will support Dr Bawumia.
Speaking on Starr FM starrchat he stated, “I will support Dr Bawumia. I respect Kennedy; he is a good man, and I think he is a true blue-party person but I think it is most unfair for us to jettison Dr Bawumia”.
“Because in our tradition, nobody has won the presidency at a go. President Akufo-Addo was three times, President Kufour was two times. So I think it will be most unfair but I respect Kennedy”, he added.
According to Frank Annoh-Dompreh, he never thought President Mahama would be president again.
He added, “I never thought President Mahama would be president again. I believed it because from what I was seeing in the country and the feedback I was getting from people was that he was a risk they did not want to take due to his former governance,” he said during an interview on Starr FM on February 20, 2025.
“I have eaten my humble pie because of the margin with which he won, I realized that God can do anything,” the MP revealed.
Frank Annoh-Dompreh asserted that Ghanaians got angry with the NPP and punished them.
Annoh Dompreh stated, “It was a big shock; we never saw it coming. If there is anyone in our party who says this was seen ahead of time well…past questions are always easy. In the aftermath of it, everybody can say anything”.
“We were all confident that even if we were going to lose, it is going to be by a thin skin. This was tough; it was too much of a blow for us. I think Ghanaians got angry with us and they punished us for it. We never thought the depth of anger was that deep. Close to about 30,000 people in my stronghold did not turn out to vote, that is why I was struggling,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Dankwah advised that it will be of huge benefit to the NPP if Dr. Bawumia makes this choice.
According to him, Dr. Bawumia carries some baggage around which he attributes to the party’s massive defeat in the December 7, 2024 elections.
Mussa Dankwah indicated that it is only after Dr Bawumia gives up his presidential ambition that the party can rebuild and make inroads in the nation’s political landscape once more.
Mussa Dankwah stated, “It will be in the best interest of the NPP if Bawumia says I won’t run again on his own, not to be pushed. . if he does that NPP can begin to rebuild the party earlier without him. Because the problems he brings are systemic”.
