A netizen has quizzed whether Ghana is not a religious country anymore after spotting Africa’s first-ever atheist billboard in Accra, Ghana.
The netizen wrote, “Isn’t Ghana a religious country anymore? Atheist Movement storms Ghana? Religious Reset 😳😳”.
According to the information gathered the billboard was sponsored by the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) in partnership with Accra Atheists.
The billboard can be found displayed in the busy business district on Cantonments Road near Osu, Accra, which reads, “Don’t believe in God? You are not alone.”
Mould, co-founder and president of Accra Atheists stated, “This is a dream come true, this billboard represents not just visibility, but validation for those who often feel isolated in their nonbelief. Thanks to FFRF’s unwavering support, we’ve achieved something historic. This moment will never be forgotten.”
FFRF Co-President Annie Laurie Gaylor also highlighted the initiative’s importance, “We are honoured to support this courageous step toward freethought visibility in Africa. Everyone deserves the right to openly express their beliefs or lack thereof without fear. We hope this billboard sparks important conversations and strengthens the secular movement in Ghana and beyond.”
The billboard seeks to achieve these goals including promoting atheism and humanism, regularising atheism which is often misinterpreted as occultism or witchcraft, increasing membership and getting the State and government to recognise atheists.
Meanwhile, an atheist is a person who disbelieves or lacks belief in the existence of God or gods.
