Manasseh Azure Awuni, an award-winning investigative journalist, has said the Independence Day celebrations a grand and wasteful celebrations.
According to Manasseh Azure Awuni, after six decades of independence, Ghana cannot keep our cities and towns clean.
He asserted that John Mahama cancelling the Independence Day celebration at the Black Star Square, has denied some people in his administration procurement deals worth millions of cedis.
However, saved the state money and set a good example that should remain forever.
Manasseh Azure Awuni’s comment comes as Felix Kwakye the Minister of Government Communications has revealed that the 2025 Independence Day celebration will be low-key to save cost.
According to Felix Kwaye, the Independence Day Celebrations are to be held at the Jubilee House this year.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu added that the last celebration in Ho cost us GHC15M, a cost we can not continue to incur.
As a result, the government of John Mahama would no longer rotate the celebration across the regions.
Addressing the media, the Minister of State for Government Communications, stated, “Whereas the intentions may be noble, President Mahama has asked that the rotational policy be suspended because of the need to scale down, and this has become necessary due to escalating costs.
It has been discovered after some review that the rotation imposed additional cost, and therefore, at a time when our national budget is severely constrained due to economic difficulties, it was not going to be sustainable to keep rotating the national celebrations”, he added.
Felix Kwaye added, “In the spirit of cutting down on non-essential expenditure, President Mahama has instructed that this rotational policy be suspended. In addition to this, the main celebration, which ordinarily would have taken place in Accra at Independence Square, has become the subject of some rollback”.
Manasseh Azure wrote on X, “By cancelling the Independence Day celebration at the Black Star Square, President John Mahama has denied some people in his administration procurement deals worth millions of cedis. He has, however, saved the state money and set a good example that should remain forever. Such grand and wasteful celebrations are meaningless when, after six decades of independence, we cannot keep our cities and towns clean. Good move, Mr. President”.
