The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has raised concerns over the invasion of his mining concession by some unidentified illegal miners.
He revealed that his mining concession at Akropong have been looted by some illegal miners.
“The site that was given to me has been invaded by illegal miners. Meanwhile, I had plans of giving it out for proper mining”
“We must find a way to solve this crisis” he said.
Addressing the minister of Lands and Natural Resources during his visit to Manhyia Palace, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II indicated that the activities of illegal mining is not only causing damage to our river bodies, lands and the forest but also have ripple effect on our economy.
He asked the Minister, Emmanuel Kofi Armah Buah, to put measures in place to tackle the illegal mining activities.
He further indicated that he had plans for the concession to be given out for proper legal mining, stating that regardless of the effort of the government to deal with illegal mining, it’s still persists.
“Security personnel should be deployed to protect concessions, small scale mining should be regularized and alternative jobs should be provided for illegal miners as part of efforts to combat the menace,” he stressed.
