President John Dramani Mahama has assured public sector workers he would support a  35% increase in salary when the economy recovers.

According to John Mahama, once Ghana recover from the economic challenges and things improve the benefit will be shared accordingly.

Speaking at the National Tripartite Committee meeting at the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment stated, “Let’s temper our demands for this year. Once we recover from these challenges, we will set realistic targets to bring down inflation, which will lower the cost of living. We will focus on growing the economy to improve things. Once the economy expands, we will share the benefits accordingly,” he said.

“I am simply appealing to you to reach an agreement on this matter so that we can use this year as a period of correction. After we have made the necessary adjustments, we will see how the economy progresses. Once it moves in the direction we all hope for, and if we have an Independent Emoluments Committee, and if you propose a 35% increase, I will support it, as it will affect my pay too”, he added.

He revealed he knew the country was in crisis but could not believe how the Akufo-Addo Bawumia government could be such reckless.

John Mahama added, “You know we are your natural elites, and we have worked together for many years, one thing that is a cardinal principle for us is to tell the truth at all times. We all knew the economy was in crisis, but some of the things I am uncovering myself have been a criminal mishandling of our economy. Ghana is now a crime scene”.

“How can a government be so reckless? I cannot understand, but we are faced with the reality, and our options are very few we can behave like an ostrich and hide our heads in the sun and let the economy crash but then what effect will it have on Ghanaian households?”, he added.

John Mahama further revealed he has informed the finance minister to cut the government machinery budget as everyone must tighten their belts.

He revealed, “I have told him, to cut expenditures as much as you like, even we in the office of government machinery cut as much of our budget as you like because we all must make those sacrifices.  I want to assure you that we are all going to tighten our belts and there will be no wasteful expenditure”.

Meanwhile, the National Tripartite Committee has announced a 10% increase in daily Minimum wage for 2025.

According to the 10 percent increment the new wage stands at GHS 19.97 per day.

The Government of Ghana has also approved a 10% salary increment for public sector workers under the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS).
