Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament Alban Bagbin has pledged to ensure the standards of parliament are not lost.
According to him, it is only through the adherence of such standards that Ghana will grow to become the ideal nation so desired.
He reiterated that he will ensure parliamentarians are held accountable for their actions and see to it that their actions are of high morality standards and show discipline.
“I also know very well that in the holy book it is stated, spare the rod and spoil the child. The rod here is not just referring to the cane, it is referring to what is right, what is just and the rule of law and so that rod I will not spare and I will not spoil you. Ghana must be saved.”
Just as Christ was celebrated for his humility, integrity and unwavering commitment to serve, he charged parliamentarians to live with the same standards in mind.
The parliament of Ghana has come under intense scrutiny and criticism from Ghanaians for actions described as “unparliamentarian”.
In the past few weeks numerous incidents, including chaos during the vetting of ministerial nominees, the use of derogatory names and comments in the House and numerous incidents of indiscipline has left Ghanaians in surprise, with many questioning the significance of the term “honorable” reserved for MPs.
