President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated that his administration successfully resolved Ghana’s electricity crisis, popularly known as ‘Dumsor,’ before leaving office in January 2017.
Speaking during the State of the Nation Address in Parliament on Thursday, February 27, 2025, he stated that his leadership approach is not to complain or shift blame but to tackle challenges head-on, one of the key reasons Ghanaians elected him as president.
Mahama highlighted Ghana’s current economic struggles, emphasizing that the 2024 election results reflected the people’s trust in his ability to restore the economy. He assured Ghanaians that, with his competent team, he is ready to address the country’s pressing challenges.
Reflecting on his past tenure, he noted that February 26, 2025, marked exactly 10 years since he stood in Parliament and pledged to fix ‘Dumsor’, a persistent power crisis at the time.
He maintained that he fulfilled that promise, stating on record that from January 2016 until his handover on January 7, 2017, Ghana experienced no power supply challenges under his administration.
“‘I want to place on record that I fixed Dumsor… I will fix the economic crisis and reset it on a path of growth and prosperity,” he told Parliament.
President John Dramani Mahama has indicated that his government through determined efforts have averted the looming power crisis commonly known as “dumsor”, after the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government neglected to arrange enough fuel to power thermal plants.
It will be recalled the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) in a statement issued revealed maintenance of the gas pipelines from Nigeria to Ghana by WAGP was initially set to take place in October 2024 but the Akufo-Addo government postponed the maintenance to January 2025.
John Mahama further noted that the maintenance work on the gas pipeline posed a significant threat to the country’s power supply.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of six newly appointed ministers at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, John Mahama stated, “The previous government did not work to ensure the smooth running of the energy sector by neglecting to arrange enough fuel to power our thermal plants”.
“Through determined efforts, I can report that we have now averted the looming threat of power outages and have begun delivering fuel to the thermal plants in the east, in advance of the shutdown of the West African Gas Pipeline”, he added.
The president further acknowledged Energy Minister, John Jinapor, for working diligently to address the situation timely.
Despite these assurances, there have been recorded cases of erratic power supply with many in the Ashanti Region relying on generator sets to power their homes and businesses in 2025.
