Former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo says she earned her appointment to Council of State by President John Dramani Mahama based on merit and competencies.
She stated that as a former Chief Justice, she is more than qualified to be a Council of State member.
The former Chief Justice refuted the claims that she was appointed because of her criticisms of the Akufo-Addo government.
“What has that (her criticism) got to do with anything? I’m a former Chief Justice, am I not? Do I or do I not qualify?
“I’m there in my own right, simply as a former Chief Justice. I’m not even there representing the Judicial Service,” she said.
Sophia Akuffo added that she will advise the president with honesty and will not be a praise singer.
“The Council of State is a body that is supposed to be advising the President. I’m not going to sing my master’s voice, so to speak.
“An adviser does not parrot. An adviser speaks with honesty. An adviser looks to the best interest, not only of the person they are advising but of the function the person they are serving,” she said.
Sophia Akuffo made this comment during the swearing-in of Council of State members yesterday, February 18, 2025.
Sophia Akuffo and 30 others were sworn into the Council of State by the President with former Speaker of Parliament Edward Doe Adjaho elected as the Chairman.
The Council of State plays a crucial role in ensuring that the country’s governance structures remain robust and responsive to the needs of the people.
The newly sworn-in members bring a wealth of experience and expertise from diverse fields, including law, academia, business, and civil society.
