Dr Mohammed Amin Adam a former Finance Minister has asked President John Dramani Mahama how can an economy he labelled as “Criminally mishandled” post decent fiscal deficits.
According to him, with a Criminally mishandled economy, they were able to afford a 30% base pay increase in 2023, followed by 23% from January to June 2024, and 25% from July to December 2024.
He further questioned what changed between December 2024 and February 2025 that suddenly put the economy in crisis, which cannot afford an adjustment in the base pay above 10%.
In a Facebook, he wrote, “ “How could an economy described as ‘criminally mishandled’ afford a 30% base pay increase in 2023, followed by 23% from January to June 2024, and 25% from July to December 2024, all while maintaining respectable fiscal deficits?”
“What has changed between December 2024 and February 2025 that suddenly put the economy in crisis, which cannot afford an adjustment in the base pay above 10%?”, he added.
President John Dramani Mahama yesterday 20 February revealed that former president Akufo-Addo criminally mishandled Ghana’s economy.
According to John Mahama, some of the things he is uncovering himself show Ghana is now a crime scene.
He asserted he knew the country was in crisis but could not believe how the Akufo-Addo Bawumia government could be such reckless.
Speaking at the National Tripartite Committee meeting at the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment stated, “You know we are your natural elites, and we have worked together for many years, one thing that is a cardinal principle for us is to tell the truth at all times. We all knew the economy was in crisis, but some of the things I am uncovering myself have been a criminal mishandling of our economy. Ghana is now a crime scene”.
“How can a government be so reckless? I cannot understand, but we are faced with the reality, and our options are very few we can behave like an ostrich and hide our heads in the sun and let the economy crash but then what effect will it have on Ghanaian households?”, he added.
