A committee has been setup to investigate procurements made by the Electricity Company of Ghana under the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government.
Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Samuel Abdulai Jinapor set up the committee as he believes the ECG has been engaged in “frivolous procurements.”
According to him, some 3000 containers belonging to the ECG has been locked at the ports and ECG will have to pay about GHS 1.5 billion in terms of demurrage.
“It’s all because they are engaged in what I call very frivolous procurements. Now, they have about 3000 containers stuck at the ports generating demurrage of about GHS 1.5 billion, that is very unacceptable. Some of the things they’ve procured will last them ten years, some will even expire in five years.
“So, we’ve commissioned a committee to investigate ECG’s procurements and the cost of these containers stacked at the ports the committee is doing a very good job,” he said.
The minister further indicated that former managers at the ECG disregarded procurement process and guidelines, highlighting high levels of corruption.
“So far, the preliminary reports I have gotten indicate that there’s massive rot at ECG,” he added.
