EC to re-run Council of State elections in North East and Ashanti regions

Council of State elections held in the North East and Ashanti Regions have been scheduled to take place for a second time on Monday, February 17, 2025.

This was announced by the Electoral Commission of Ghana in a bid to ensure representation from all regions on the Council.

In a statement released on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, the EC indicated that a tie in the North East Region, where the two leading candidates each secured six votes had necessitated the re-run.

Per electoral regulations, a re-run is required to determine the winner.

Also, in the Ashanti Region, the election could not be concluded due to disruptions caused by unidentified thugs, prompting the need for a new elections altogether.

To ensure the process proceeds smoothly, the Electoral Commission 

The Commission stated that, to ensure a smooth and secure process, they have formally requested the Ghana Police Service and the National Election Security Taskforce to enhance security at the election venues to prevent further disturbances.

The Commission assured the public of its commitment to conducting a free, fair, and transparent electoral process.
