The Ministry of Education has dismissed reports suggesting that the government plans to abolish teacher trainee allowances.
According to the Ministry, the story published by Daily Graphic indicating the cancellation of these allowances are false and creating a wrong impression.
The Ministry pointed out that a front-page publication in the February 4, 2025 edition of The Daily Graphic had carried a misleading headline, which suggested the removal of the allowances, despite the actual content of the story not supporting such a claim.
The Ministry went ahead to urge Daily Graphic to publish a rejoinder and “correct the wrong impression created”.
Clarifying the Minister’s remarks, the Ministry in a press statement emphasized that the government remains committed to supporting students in Colleges of Education and is open to exploring ways to enhance financial assistance.
It noted that, if necessary, an improved student loan scheme could be considered as an additional support measure.
The Minister also assured that the government would maintain the allowances until all stakeholders reach a firm agreement after further deliberations.
The Ministry urged media houses to verify information before publication to prevent unnecessary concerns among stakeholders.
Reaffirming its commitment to supporting teacher trainees and improving education delivery, it called on the public to disregard the misleading report and rely on official communication for accurate information.
