They noted that  Instead, the party suffered significant losses in these areas, eroding the gains the NPP had made since 1992.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday 4th February 2025 the spokesperson for the group, Benjamin Ofori detailed, “The NPP require not only, a different candidate, but a winnable one for the upcoming election apart from unpopular government decisions that angered the populace leading to the embarrassing and unprecedented electoral defeat the election results have revealed that the NPP had the wrong candidate in the person of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

The consideration that was going to bring, northern and Islamic votes did not materialize rather the party lost significantly in those areas. The party did not only lose the presidential elections but the parliamentary elections also compared to the 2020 elections”, the group added.

The spokesperson of the group added, “Losing four out of five regions under the candidature of a northerner and a Muslim is embarrassing. Even in Dr Bawumia’s home region, the margin of victory over President John Dramani Mahama was minimal as compared to 2020 results. Whereas in the home region of President Mahama, the margin of victory over Dr Bawumia was huge. Recording zero in some constituencies was equally humiliating”.

The Concerned Traders of the NPP noted that the NPP currently do not have any members of parliament in the Upper East and Upper West regions under the candidature of Dr Bawumia.

“If the party want a victory in the 2028 elections then the candidature of Dr Bawumia should be changed, or the candidate will only file a candidate and not a president. If they present Dr Bawumia then the party will stay in opposition for 12 years”, they boldly reiterated.
