Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the December 7, 2024 elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been advised against running for elections again in 2028.
Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Dankwah advised that it will be of a huge benefit to the NPP if Dr. Bawumia makes this choice.
According to him, Dr. Bawumia carries some baggage around which he attributes to the party’s massive defeat in the December 7, 2024 elections.
Mussa Dankwah indicated that it is only after Dr. Bawumia gives up his presidential ambition that the party can rebuild and make inroads in the nation’s political landscape once more.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana programme last Tuesday, Mussa Dankwah said “It will be in the best interest of the NPP if Bawumia says I won’t run again on his own, not to be pushed. . if he does that NPP can begin to rebuild the party earlier without him. Because the problems he brings are systemic.”
The results of the Decemeber 7, 2024 elections as announced by the Electoral Commission (EC) on Monday, December 9, saw the candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama polling 6,328,397 votes representing 56.55% of the valid votes cast, defeating his primary rival, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who garnered 4,657,304 votes representing 41.61%.
Following the defeat, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) announced the formation of a committee in January 2025 to review the party’s performance in the election.
Addressing a press conference at the party’s headquarters, National Chairman Stephen Ayesu Ntim said the result was not what they expected.
“We were very hopeful and positive, and our aim was to secure an emphatic victory at the polls. And we went very hard at it. As a party, we put in our best efforts in the campaign. I commend all members of the various campaign teams of the party, from polling stations to the national level, who also put in their very best in the competition.
“There is no doubt that the outcome of the election was not what we hoped for. We may not have won the battle, but we haven’t lost the war on the quest for a better Ghana, shaped by the ideals and philosophies of the New Patriotic Party.
“The party will, in January 2025, set up an effective and objective election review committee to take a post-mortem into the outcome of the election.
“The committee will engage all party stakeholders and the general public on the factors and circumstances leading to our defeat,” he said.
