The Akan community in Ghana which has over the years predominantly supported and associated with the New Patriotic Party have now shifted alliance.
In a new survey conducted by Global InfoAnalystics, a majority of Akans are now affiliated to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), a turn of events that come as a surprise to many political actors.
The poll shows that 29% of Akans support NPP, while 41% now support NDC, an indication that the NDC has now taken hold of the Akan stronghold of the NPP.
This goes to show that Akans now dominated party affiliations of the leading political parties in Ghana, owing to the fact that they make up the largest ethnic group in Ghana.
“In what could be a shock to political analysts, the polling data shows that majority of Akan voters now associate themselves with the NDC. The poll shows that 29% of Akans support NPP, while 41% now support NDC. 15% are floating voters, 4% support other parties and 10% did not disclose their party affiliations,” the poll said.
From the same survey, it was revealed in the Ga Adangme group, only 17% of them are affiliated to the NPP, with an overwhelming 58% of them supporting the NDC. Meanwhile, 16 percent of the Ga Adangme group are floating voters with 4% supporting other parties.
For Mole-Dagbani group, 22%support NPP, 58% NDC, 11%Floating voters, 4%other parties and 5% Did not disclose their party affiliations.
The NDC also managed to keep the lead in their stronghold amongst the Ewes. An overwhelming 65% of Ewes support the NDC with the NPP getting only 11% of Ewes throwing their support behind them.
There have been many questions about the sudden shift of Ghanaians with many showing support to the NDC. Questions being asked are predominantly as to whether Ghanaians now support the NDC because it is in power and seek to get something from them, or if they truly support the NDC because the party is taking steps to rectify the wrongs of the NPP.
