A supporter of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called for the removal of minority leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
The X user asserts that Afenyo Markin thinks he is a hero of the party but he is part of the reason many NPP MPs lost their seats.
According to the netizen, there are five reasons why he is demanding the removal of Afenyo Markin as minority leader as the NPP must rebrand starting from parliament.
He noted that Afenyo-Markin’s behaviour on the Appointments Committee is unbecoming of a leader, hence the call.
The netizen identified as Oh Menua on X wrote, “We lost the 2024 elections in an inglorious when he was majority. The party must rebrand starting from parliament and he must be sacked as minority leader”.
“He lead a very chaotic vetting missing out on the opportunity to expose and pin corrupt NDC appointees. If a leader is able to tell his fellow to destroy state property and even insult them in public then he’s no leader but a tyrant”, he added.
The netizen further claimed Afenyo-Markin is pompous and throws his weight around he claimed that the same pomposity caused the NPP’s defeat.
He stated, “Afenyo-Markin is pompous and throws he’s weight around. That same pomposity caused our defeat”.
“Asking unintelligent questions at vetting. Afenyo will build suspense when questioning ministerial nominees and end with the most disappointing remarks”, he added.
Oh Menua finally stated his last reason as “He thinks he’s a hero of the party but he’s part of the reason many NPP MPs lost their seats”.
“Compared to the high standard of Kyei Mensah Bonsu is a mere shadow rewrite in 200 words”, he added.
His call comes after what happened during the vetting of Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice nominee, Justice Edem Srem-Sai on Wednesday, February 26 2025.
Minority Leader, Afenyo-Markin took his turn with the nominee after Srem-Sai had spent over an hour answering questions from the various committee members.
The minority leader after questioning the nominee about his hometown asked him to briefly demonstrate the ‘Akpi’ dance after the nominee ascribed to the dance as part of his tribe’s culture.
“Honourable Nominee, we are here to learn about our country, kindly demonstrate the Akpi dance for a bit, just for a second,” Afenyo-Markin asked the nominee.
In a sharp response, Chairman of the Appointments Committee, Bernard Ahiafor overruled Afenyo-Markin’s request asking Srem-Sai not to demonstrate the ‘Akpi’ dance.
Bernard Ahiafor stated the vetting procedure is not a forum for demonstrations but an Appointments Committee mandated to vet nominees.
“Honourable nominee, the question is overruled. You are not going to demonstrate,” Ahiafor stated.
