Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the Minority Chief Whip has admitted the 2024 election defeat was a big shock for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Frank Annoh-Dompreh asserted that Ghanaians got angry with the NPP and punished them.
Speaking in an interview on Starr FM on February 20, 2025, Annoh Dompreh stated, “It was a big shock; we never saw it coming. If there is anyone in our party who says this was seen ahead of time well…past questions are always easy. In the aftermath of it, everybody can say anything”.
“We were all confident that even if we were going to lose, it is going to be by a thin skin. This was tough; it was too much of a blow for us. I think Ghanaians got angry with us and they punished us for it. We never thought the depth of anger was that deep. Close to about 30,000 people in my stronghold did not turn out to vote, that is why I was struggling,” he added.
He further revealed, “It is a mixed feeling. They are telling us there was a hardship, the economy was not in good shape, and when the economy was picking up, we had to go for elections. I believe that I am humbled. Once upon a time, they gave us a difference of 1 million votes, which in recent times, no one has garnered that votes”.
According to Frank Annoh-Dompreh, he never thought President Mahama would be president again.
He added, “I never thought President Mahama would be president again. I believed it because from what I was seeing in the country and the feedback I was getting from people was that he was a risk they did not want to take due to his former governance,” he said during an interview on Starr FM on February 20, 2025.
“I have eaten my humble pie because of the margin with which he won, I realized that God can do anything,” the MP revealed.
The member of parliament further revealed that it would be unfair for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to jettison Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
He revealed that he respect Kennedy Agyepong but will support Dr Bawumia.
“I will support Dr Bawumia. I respect Kennedy; he is a good man, and I think he is a true blue-party person but I think it is most unfair for us to jettison Dr Bawumia. Because in our tradition, nobody has won the presidency at a go. President Akufo-Addo was three times, President Kufour was two times. So I think it will be most unfair but I respect Kennedy,” he added.
Meanwhile, President Mahama won the general elections, obtaining a total of 6,591,790 votes, which represents 56.42% of the vote, compared to the New Patriotic Party’s 4,877,611 votes, or 41.75%.
