A netizen has quizzed the John Dramani Mahama administration about the whereabouts of their game-changer policy the 24-hour economy they promised Ghanaians.
According to the netizen, Ghanaians can not see the head and tail of the NDC 24-hour economy.
The netizen noted the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is rather sacking last-minute appointees instead of giving Ghanaians jobs around the clock as they promised during the campaign season.
The netizen wrote, “One job three shifts”; where is that 24-hour economy, we can’t see the head and tail of that famous vote-buying gimmick. They are rather sacking last-minute appointees instead of giving us jobs around the clock”.
It will be recalled a letter dated February 10, 2025, by the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah directed all Heads of government institutions to nullify all appointments made by the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration after December 7, 2024.
Ironically, the NDC campaigned on the wings of jobs for all Ghanaians through the 24-hour economy with little seen of the policy they have been accused by some Ghanaians for dismissing the same Ghanaians they promised to provide jobs for.
John Mahama in the run-up to the 2024 elections promised Ghanaians the 24-hour economy as a game-changer policy, the policy is meant to extend the productivity of work from daytime into night to afford opportunities to business owners and consumers. The policy seeks to create more jobs for the unemployed Ghanaian youths.
During the President’s inauguration speech on 7 January, he spoke about the 24-hour economy policy which he says is aimed at stimulating local industries and job creation.
He stated, “24-hour economy” aimed at stimulating local industries, creating jobs, and attracting foreign investments. He explained that this model would provide opportunities for young entrepreneurs and empower every Ghanaian to contribute to the nation’s progress.
“In this vision, we will unlock the potential that has long remained dormant, allowing us to harness the energy and creativity of all our people”, he reiterated.
However little has been heard of the 24-hour economy after President Mahama named Augustus Goosie Tanoh a Presidential Advisor, Responsible for the 24-hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development.
There has been little progress made with the 24-hour economy which promised a 24/7 three shifts of eight hours to boost production, promote productivity and generate well-paying jobs aimed at transforming Ghana’s economy.
Nonetheless, little has been seen of the NDC game-changer policy, with a six-member committee being set up to refine the 24-hour economy implementation in the Volta Region.
The NPA CEO Godwin Kudzo Tameklo has also revealed plans to deploy automated dispensers to implement a 24-hour economy.
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has also announced the passport office will work day, night and dawn shifts to significantly reduce passport processing times in Ghana.
The Minister indicated that the reform will ensure the Ministry operates 24 hours a day, reducing the current waiting period of three to four weeks to just a week.
