Movement TV, owned by Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, took a different turn during the inaugural ceremony of President John Dramani Mahama.
While most TV stations broadcasted the historic event, Movement TV chose to air a local movie, sparking heated debates on social media about political bias.
A trending video posted by an X user, “KAY,” showed someone flipping through TV channels, revealing that nearly every station was airing the inauguration except Movement TV.
This action has drawn widespread criticism, with many questioning the station’s decision to disregard such a significant national event.
On January 7, 2025, John Dramani Mahama officially assumed office as President of the Republic of Ghana, marking the beginning of his second term after a decisive victory in the December 2024 elections.
The historic swearing-in ceremony took place at the Black Star Square in Accra, with dignitaries, political leaders, and citizens in attendance. Mahama, the leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), was sworn in by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, reaffirming his commitment to uphold the Constitution and serve the people of Ghana.
The event also saw the official swearing-in of Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as Vice President, making history as the first woman to hold the position.
As Mahama embarks on his second term, his administration is set to prioritize youth employment, economic recovery, healthcare, and infrastructure development.
The smooth transition of power highlighted Ghana’s robust democratic practices.
However, the actions of Movement TV have raised questions about media impartiality and political influence, further fueling discussions about the role of press freedom in Ghana’s democracy.
