Students of the University of Ghana are gearing up for a demonstration following the announcement of a 20% increase in Residential Facility User Fees (RFUF) for traditional halls of residence.
The proposed increment has sparked outrage, with many arguing that the fees are becoming increasingly unbearable for both continuing and incoming students.
In a post trending on X with the caption We No Go pay, it’s too much, traditional hall increment.
According to information released by the university’s Public Affairs Directorate, the increment is attributed to a rise in electricity tariffs and the need for proper maintenance of the halls.
The government has reportedly ceased funding the electricity bills of traditional halls, compelling them to bear the costs themselves.
As a result, incoming Level 100 students are expected to pay GHS 3,000, up from GHS 2,500, while continuing students will pay GHS 1,500 instead of GHS 1,000 for the next semester.
The university’s Student Representative Council (SRC) has acknowledged the concerns of students and issued a statement expressing its dissatisfaction with the increment.
The SRC has convened an emergency EXECOM meeting, including all Junior Common Room (JCR) Presidents and EXECOM members, to deliberate on the matter.
Despite the SRC’s interventions, the news of the increment has led to growing tensions on campus.
Some students are demanding immediate action and are planning to hit the streets to protest the fee hike.
