The moment Alban Sumana Bagbin was declared speaker of the 9th parliament has surfaced on social media.
In a video posted by GTV Ghana, Alban Bagbin was the only person nominated for the speaker of the 9th parliament.
The Majority Leader of Parliament, Cassiel Ato Forson moved the motion to make him the speaker stating, “I move that Hon Alban Bagbin do take the chair of this House as the Speaker of the 9th Parliament”. Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin seconded his motion.
The legislative house proceeded with a vote which agreed harmoniously that Alban Bagbin be made speaker of the 9th parliament.
Gertrude Esaaba Torkornoo the Chief Justice successively administered the Oath of Office to Bagbin, officially confirming his position as Speaker.
Alban Bagbin in his acceptance speech called for unity in the house and promised to work fairly.
Speaker Bagbin will continue to steer the new John Mahama administration in parliament with the NDC dominating parliament with a strong majority.
Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Akatsi South, Bernard Ahiafor, has been elected as the 1st Deputy Speaker of Ghana’s 9th Parliament, with the Member of Parliament for Fomena, Andrew Amoako Asiamah, has been elected as the 2nd Deputy Speaker of Parliament.
The NDC has retained its leadership team for the 9th Parliament, majority leader being Ato Forson, deputy Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Majority chief whip Governs Kwame Agbodza and his deputy Ahmed Ibrahim.
