Agbogbomefia of the Asogli Traditional Area, Togbe Afede XIV, has revealed a visit to President Akufo-Addo in 2020 ended in him and other Chiefs suffering untold embarrassment at the presidency.
According to him, this happened when together with other Chiefs from the Volta Region, they visited the then President at the Jubilee House to appeal for the withdrawal of soldiers deployed to the Volta Region ahead of the December 7 polls.
Togbe Afede XIV disclosed that the outcome of the meeting was far from the best as the Chiefs were disgraced in the presence of their subjects, the then Volta Regional Minister, Archibald Yoa Letsa and John Peter Amewu.
He recalled that the Chiefs were accused of being sympathizers of the NDC and were the masterminds behind the transporting of people from Togo to vote on behalf of the NDC in the 2020 elections.
“I recall that in 2020 when Volta felt under siege from soldiers that have been sent from Accra in the run-up to the elections, we came together a good number of us from the Volta House of Chiefs visited the then President Akufo-Addo to appeal for mercy on our people.
“Sadly, our Minister was there together with one of our own sons, Mr. Amewu was there, they denigrated us and embarrassed us the chiefs and we left extremely sad.
“For instance, it was said that I, Togbe was going round to interfere registration which was not true. It was said that we the chiefs were all NDC and we typically import voters from Togo and hoard them for weeks so that they vote for the NDC, those were the comment said right in our presence. It wasn’t palatable at all,” he revealed.
