United States President, Donald Trump, has declared that the country will only recognize two genders, thus male and female.
He made this declaration during his second inaugural address on January 20, 2025.
“As of today, it will henceforth be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders, male and female,” he stated emphatically.
In what Trump’s administration has branded a “common sense” order, the government will now be ending all federal funding or recognition of gender identities with this policy.
The definition of male and female will be based on whether people are born with eggs or sperm, rather than on their chromosomes.
Under the order, prisons and settings such as shelters for migrants and rape victims would be segregated by sex, based on this criteria.
Officials also said the order would impact federal documents including passports.
This announcement has received applause from Trump supporters while critics including the LGBTQ+ community and advocacy groups have condemned the move, describing it as discriminatory.
