The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has been accused of being behind the spread of the fire outbreak in Kantamanto market on the dawn of Thursday, January 2, 2024.
According to some eyewitnesses, the first fire tender to arrive at the scene of the fire did not come to douse the fie.
Per their account, the first fire tender was filled with petrol and intensified the fire, leading it to destroy more shops in the market.
“The first car (fire tender) to come here was filled with petrol. All the shops in the front lane had not caught fire. So they pretended they were dousing the flames with water but they were only intensifying it. The more they poured the supposed water (which she claims was petrol), the stronger the fire got. The first fire service car to get here was filled with petrol and not water,” one eyewitness recounted.
At least 1,545 shops were destroyed after a fire erupted in the Kantamanto market area during the early hours of January 2, 2025.
The eyewitness account if true, goes to validate an earlier revelation from yawanews.com sources According to sources in Kantamanto, traders had previously received warnings of a potential attack during Ghana’s 2024 election period, prompting precautionary measures.
“When we were about to vote, we received intel about an attack on the market; so we even spoke to IGP Dampare to deploy police officers around the market to ensure safety. After the elections, we assumed the threat was over,” the source said.
