The Minority caucus in Parliament, has staged a protest calling for an end to post-election violence.
They staged the protests in parliament following the recent violence in Obuasi which led to the death of nine (9).
The Minority interrupted parliamentary proceedings today, by chanting patriotic songs and calling on the Majority and President John Dramani Mahama to call its party faithful to order.
Post the December 7, 2024 elections which saw the National Democratic Congress (NDC) enjoying a convincing victory, there have been several incidents of violence recorded across the nation. It has been alleged that these violent clashes were orchestrated by NDC party faithful who claimed they could do anything and get away with them because their party was in power.
The incidents started with purported NDC supporters invading the offices of state agencies, seeking to take them over.
However, this escalated over the weekend in Obuasi when a group of approximately 60 illegal miners breached the security fence and attempted to access the Deep Decline area of the mine.
The miners were reportedly armed with locally manufactured rifles, pump-action guns, knives, axes, gas cylinders, and other tools, and opened fire on the military personnel when confronted.
In self-defence, the soldiers returned fire, resulting in nine (9) fatalities with other illegal miners seriously injured. The remaining individuals fled the scene.
