President John Dramani Mahama has tasked the Ghana National Fire Service to install CCTV cameras at all vantage points in markets nationwide.
According to him, this move is part of measures to control fire outbreaks in markets across the nation.
During a meeting with leadership of the Kantamanto market, he said, “We have asked the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to deploy their fire tenders close to the markets in the night where they are major markets. So that in the event of a fire outbreak, there are right there on the scene so that they’re able to quench it before it causes any damage. We are also asking them to explore installing CCTV cameras at all vantage points of every market so that if anybody is involved in setting fires to any markets, we will see on the CCTV what is happening.”
He also revealed that meetings have been held with heads of the various security agencies to tighten “security in all major markets so that we can prevent an such occurrence.”
According to President Mahama, while the government is doing its part, traders must also ensure they use the right wiring and certified electricians to work on electrical installations in their shops.
Hundreds of shops were destroyed after a fire erupted in the Kantamanto market area during the early hours of January 2, 2025.
According to sources, the fire peaked around 1:00 AM to 1:20AM, and ravaged everything within a two-mile radius, destroying goods running into millions of cedis.
Traders have however started rebuilding their stalls to commence trading once more.
