President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to work judiciously to return peace to Bawku.
“During the campaign, I stated that if God granted our desire and I was elected president, bringing peace to Bawku was going to be one of my number one priorities.”
“So today is exactly one week since I was sworn in at the Black Star Square and it’s my first major assignment outside Accra and I decided to come and assure you that we are going to work very hard to make sure that we bring peace back to Bawku,” Mahama stated.
President Mahama expressed sadness over the disturbances which have arisen in Bawku once more, and reminisced on the peace they enjoyed during his first term tenure between 2012-2016.
“I remember when I was President (2012-2016) Bawku and surrounding areas were very peaceful and work was going on and people were going about their duties. It is sad that this situation has surfaced again. I know that for the last 3 years you’ve not been able to sleep, you’ve been living under stress.”
He assured the people of Bawku that bringing peace back to Bawku is the priority of his government.
President Mahama pledged to restore permanent peace to the people of Bawku.
Bawku has been a hotspot of ethnic tensions for years, with the conflict primarily involving the Kusasi and Mamprusi ethnic groups. Despite multiple interventions by successive governments, the situation remains volatile, with sporadic clashes erupting periodically.
The protracted conflict, rooted in chieftaincy disputes, continues to claim lives and disrupt socio-economic activities in Bawku and its surrounding communities.
The death toll from the conflict has now risen to 41 since renewed clashes broke out in October 2024.
