Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has spoken against persons who oversee the building and commissioning of statues of themselves while they are alive.
According to him, it is better for one to let the people they have led celebrate them with such monuments, rather than try to celebrate themselves while alive.
“In any case when you’re alive, it is not advisable to build a statue for yourself. When you’re no more the people who will admire what you have done will build a statute for you,” he said at an event.
He added that morality is the hallmark of every society adding, “we will do all we can to stop the moral decadence. It doesn’t help anybody for us to have a lawless society. But leadership is to set the best examples so that others will follow.”
Although he did not name anyone, many in Ghana can relate to such a scenario.
President Akufo-Addo unveiled a statue of himself in November 2024, at the Effia Nkwanta Hospital roundabout. The unveiling received intense criticism from Ghanaians who claimed he had done little to develop the region to warrant a statue.
Unknown residents showed their displeasure by completely destroying the statue on January 14, 2025.
