The Minister-Designate for Labour, Jobs, and Employment Dr Rashid Pelpuo has stated he will go along with many who will pose a view that there’s a need for a review of Ghana’s retirement age.
According to Dr Rashid Pelpuo, there is a lot to talk about increasing the retirement age now.
He asserted that some people say it should be increased to 65 others 70 years.
Speaking during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 30, Dr Pelpuo stated, “There’s a lot of talk about increasing the retirement age now, some say up to 65 years, some say up to 70 years, but they are still strong why should they retire? I think it should come as a result of a harmonious decision. We will need to reconsider or consider whether it’s time for us to do it or not”.
“I will go along the many who will pose a view that there’s a need for a review, given our economy and our capacity to deal with it”, he added.
Dr Rashid Pelpuo further pledged his commitment to improving the working conditions of public sector employees in Ghana.
The Minister-Designate added, “I think it’s a major area and I will be tackling it. I’m happy I will do it if you do approve my nomination because it’s a big question for all Ghanaians.
“I know that the Ghanaian worker is very conscientious, very committed, very hardworking. But we need a kind of policy direction to help him produce more so that we can pay and know that we’re paying something worthwhile. We will be committing ourselves to working at it”, he stated.
