Minister-Designate for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has sympathized with Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) over their work conditions.
He wished their many issues were resolved yesterday so that their work would have been much smoother with lessened risk.
Appearing before the Appointments Committee of Parliament today, January 24, 2025, he spoke about taking steps to address the issues of firemen and women. He said, “I wish I could give assurance and even give timelines, and I believe the timelines I would’ve given would’ve been yesterday because these are institutions which are suffocating.”
The Asawase MP noted that Fire Officers are constantly at risk because of smoke inhalation, severe burns and life-threatening injuries “and when they do these to protect us, we then even forget that we need to take care of them.”
He disclosed that the GNFS does not have a health facility of its own and has to fall on the Police hospital and others for emergency care, when specialized hospitals should be built for them.
What makes it more disheartening is that some of these hospitals refuse to care for Fire Officers as their bills are not cleared in a timely fashion, resulting in some having to sort out bills for injuries suffered on the job.
He pledged to improve the working and living conditions of Fire Officers, and mostly important revealed that strategies will be implemented to prevent fires and save Fire Officers from such injuries and reduce job risks significantly.
