A social media user, has called on televangelist Dr. Lawrence Tetteh to inform President Mahama to assent to the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill aka the Anti-Gay bill.
A post attributed to Dr. Lawrence Tetteh read, “Ghanaian’s voting massively for the NDC was based on LGBTQ.”
Reacting to the post, X user @AcheampongHarry wrote, “Then please tell him to sign the Bill”.
In a meeting with the Catholic Bishop Conference, President John Dramani Mahama stated that the Anti-Gay bill died with the 8th Parliament as it did not receive presidential assent during the period.
“The LGBTQ Bill died with the 8th Parliament, but I think we need to have a conversation on that. I think it should be government sponsored and not a Private Member’s Bill,” he stated.
He suggested that rather than seek to pass the Anti-Gay bill to law, there should be the establishment of a curriculum that inculcates “these values into our children as they’re growing up so that we don’t need to legislate it.”
The Anti-Gay bill was a Private Members bill approved by the Parliament of Ghana on 28 February 2024 with bipartisan support.
The bill did not come into effect as it was not assented by the country’s immediate past president, Nana Akufo-Addo.
