Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called on President John Dramani Mahama to expedite the announcement of his full ministerial appointments, describing the current piecemeal approach as “tot-tot” appointments.
His comments came in response to a communique from the presidency, which announced three ministerial nominees: Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson as Finance Minister-designate, John Abdulai Jinapor as Energy Minister-designate, and Dominic Akuritinga Ayine as Attorney General and Minister for Justice-designate.
The nominations, submitted to Parliament on January 9, 2025, were made in accordance with Article 78 of the 1992 Constitution.
A statement from Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Acting Spokesperson to the President, highlighted the significance of the appointments, emphasizing the qualifications and experience of the nominees.
While acknowledging the competence of the nominees, Afenyo-Markin raised concerns about the President’s approach to appointments.
Speaking in Parliament, he urged the government to demonstrate readiness to govern by naming a full cabinet rather than rolling out appointments in bits.
“This government promised a 24-hour economy during their campaign, yet they are starting with incomplete ministerial appointments. Ghanaians expect more urgency and preparation from a government that claimed it was ready to lead,” he stated.
The Minority Leader also pointed out that Parliament should be the first recipient of any official communication regarding such appointments, criticizing the practice of releasing information to the media before informing the House.
Despite his critique of the appointment process, Afenyo-Markin commended the nominees for their qualifications and service.
Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson was recognized for his rise from a backbencher to a key leadership position, with the Minority Leader describing his journey as an inspiration for young politicians.
Similarly, Dominic Ayine’s academic and legal expertise and John Jinapor’s strong performance in opposition were acknowledged as factors that justified their nominations.
