Hon. Cassiel Ato Forson, the finance minister-designate comments on road tolls in 2021 and 2025 have surfaced after his vetting yesterday January 13, 2025.
According to Ato Forson in 2021 he has always said that the road tolls must be removed because the amount of revenue the government gets compared to the fuel burnt on the roads is not worthwhile.
Ato Forson stated in 2021, “I am not surprised, but something to cover what we are going to pay, and so they are giving something back, well the revenue lost will be about 72 million it is not that big, so I have always said that road tolls out there should be removed”.
“Because of the amount of money, in terms of fuel, that we burn on traffic as against the revenue the government gets I don’t think it is worthwhile, I will say that it is something all of us are expecting it is right that they have taken the decision and I will commend them”, he detailed.
Appearing before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, January 13 2025, Dr Forson revealed the NDC position on the road tolls, stating, “Mr Chairman the NDC indicated from day one that the road toll will come back, we are not running away from it. In fact, the Honorable Haruna Iddrisu at the time the minority leader said that the NDC promises to bring back the road toll the Hansard will bare us out, we have not run away from that fact”.
“So, I can assure you we are a party that sticks to our promises, and whatever we have promised to do we will do just that, if the road tolls is a way to raise revenue, we will raise the revenue, and if you use the road you have to pay the tolls and it all over the world Ghana will not be the first country will not be the last one we have to contribute towards road maintenance”, he added.
