Ghanaian activist, Oliver Barker-Vormawor has championed the revocation of mining licenses issued by the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government.
His demand comes following the revelation of continued destruction in the Tano Anwia forest reserve due illegal mining activities currently ongoing in there.
In a post of X, Barker-Vormawor shared a picture of the current situation of the forest reserve, circling out areas in which illegal mining activities are taking place.
“Erastus Asare Donkor says as we speak, there are groups still inside the Tano Anwia forest reserve mining illegally and further degrading the forest. This pic was taken this morning!” he wrote.
According to him, the persons mining in the forest reserve are likely operating “with some of the over 2000 licenses issued by the former Regime.”
“These licenses must be revoked! Our approach to irresponsible mining cannot include allowing people to do “legally” the exact things they did “illegally.” He added.
The activist recalled Ghanaian youth, including himself protesting against the illegal mining (galamsey) menace barely five (5) months ago which led to their arrest, but says they will hit the streets again to fight against the menace.
“It’s been nearly 5months since we were arrested for protesting Galamsey. It seems to me that this existential threat must bring us back to the streets,” he added.
The Democracy Hub, an advocacy group with Barker-Vormawor as one of its leaders embarked on a #StopGalamseyNow demonstration in September 21, 2024. The demonstration resulted in the arrest of over 40 protestors who were charged with various offences including disrupting public law and order, destruction of public property amongst a host of others.
