President John Dramani Mahama has ordered an investigation into the Obuasi mine deaths.
In a statement, John Mahama ordered an immediate investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident,
He further assured the public that anyone found to have acted unlawfully would face justice.
Portions of the statement noted, “In response to the unfortunate incident, President John Dramani Mahama has ordered an immediate investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the clashes and ensure that any individuals found to have acted unlawfully are brought to justice”.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces have revealed that the illegal miners fired first at soldiers who tried to stop them from accessing Anglo Gold Ashanti mines.
According to the GAF statement, their troops returned fire in self-defence leading to the death of seven illegal miners and one seriously injured.
Their statement added that the illegal miners were wielding locally manufactured rifles, pump action guns, gas cylinders, knives, heavy-duty industrial bolt cutters, axes and machetes.
