Minister-Designate for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, says the wearing of body cameras by policer officers during official duties will become a norm with him as sector minister.
He intimated that this will a major move to clamp down on police misconduct, including but not limited to extortion and brutality.
According to him, this move will enhance accountability within the Police Service and make it trustworthy to the Ghanaian populace.
Appearing before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Friday, January 24, he mentioned that the repeated cases of police extortion and brutality had resulted in the loss of public confidence and respect.
He believes the adoption of European standards of policing where every police officer is required to wear a body cam and activate them whenever they are executing their mandate will go a long way to curtail the incidence of police extortion and brutality.
“We will ensure that if you are a police officer and you have to step out, then you have your body camera on to take away all the ambiguity and the troubles because when you put the body camera on, everywhere you are, you are being recorded.
“So that when you are on the road extorting money and brutalize others, it will show and record whatever the police officer is doing.”
He is optimistic this initiative will bring about clarity and remove any doubts and confusions when it comes to cases of reportedly police brutality and extortion.
