The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has recounted a historical tale of ultimate sacrifice to highlight the deep commitment and duty required to uphold the Asante Kingdom.
During the destoolment of the Queen Mother of the Denyase Traditional Area, Nana Adutwiwaa Bonin III, Otumfuo narrated the story of his predecessor, Otumfuo Osei Tutu I, who sacrificed his beloved wife, Agyapomaa, to secure victory in a great war that threatened the kingdom.
Wielding an ancient gun named Agyapomaa—a symbol of this historical act—Otumfuo explained that the Asantehene at the time was directed to sacrifice his wife, hang her bead on the gun, and proceed to battle.
“He loved her dearly above all, but he sacrificed her for the sake of the kingdom,” Otumfuo stated in Twi while holding the gun, which still bore the bead of the sacrificed wife.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II shared the story as he delivered judgment on the Queen Mother, who was destooled for dishonoring the Great Oath of the Asantehene.
He acknowledged the difficulty of his decision, expressing his fondness for Nana Bonin III but emphasizing that loyalty to the kingdom and its sacred oaths must prevail above personal feelings.
