Former Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of exploiting his popularity to gain votes in the recently concluded 2024 general elections.
During an Instagram Live session, Gyan voiced his frustration, stating, “The NPP used my popularity to get votes from the people.”
His remarks have sparked widespread discussions about the intersection of sports, politics, and public influence in Ghana.
Gyan’s involvement with the NPP started when he was named chairman of the “Youth and Sports” subcommittee for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign.
Nonetheless, his participation was brief. Only weeks prior to the elections, Gyan stepped down from his position, expressing his wish to concentrate on humanitarian efforts.
Gyan expressed his regret participating in the party politics,claiming they exploited his position to influence voters.
The NPP experienced a major loss in the December 7 , 2024 general elections.
Their presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, lost to John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in a landslide victory.
