Concerns over a looming power crisis have sparked public outcry, with business owners calling on the government to take immediate action to ensure uninterrupted power supply. A printing press owner has urged authorities to “sit up” and deliver on their promises, stressing that a stable power supply is critical for businesses and the 24-hour economy envisioned by President John Dramani Mahama.
“For the past years, the power supply has been stable, except for some minor outages last year. But we don’t want to hear anything about ‘dumsor’ like we had in the past. It affected our business badly,” he stated.
According to the business owner Ghanaians voted for the government to lead effectively , “In his manifesto, he promised us 24-hour power to drive the economy. How is that possible if the lights are off? We need power to work and to make the 24-hour economy a reality.”
This plea comes on the heels of alarming revelations by Yapei Kusawgu MP John Jinapor about an impending power crisis caused by a critical fuel shortage. Jinapor disclosed that the country’s fuel stock is dangerously low, with just five hours of supply for heavy fuel oil and diesel remaining.
“If nothing is done, we are likely to run out of fuel in two days,” Jinapor warned, blaming the outgoing administration for failing to secure adequate fuel supplies and leaving the incoming government in a precarious situation.
The printing press owner’s concerns echo the sentiments of many Ghanaians who fear the return of power outages, or ‘dumsor,’ that previously crippled businesses and households. They are now urging the government to act swiftly to avert the looming crisis and fulfill its promises to the people.
