Mahama Ayariga the Majority Leader in parliament has boldly claimed the NDC’s position on the Anti-Gay Bill remains unchanged.
According to him, the NDC has consistently supported the Anti-Gay Bill.
He asserted that for most documents, once they don’t come into force during the life of parliament and the tenure of the president, they are considered elapsed, so somebody could challenge the process.
His comments come as President Mahama in a meeting with the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference hinted at his reluctance to legislate the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.
John Mahama stated, “We won’t need a bill to enforce our family values, and that’s why I think more than even the Family Values Bill, it’s us agreeing on a curriculum that inculcates these values into our children as they’re growing up so that we don’t need to legislate it”, he added.
In an interview on Channel One TV’s The Point of View, Mahama Ayariga detailed, “Absolutely not, I haven’t seen anywhere, I haven’t been involved in any discussion at which there’s a change in position. At this stage, we were like can we just take it and sign? Will it be proper law? Won’t somebody challenge the procedure we are using, saying that its life has elapsed? For most documents, once they don’t come into force during the life of parliament and the tenure of the president, they are considered elapsed.”
Meanwhile, Alban Bagbin the Speaker of Parliament has boldly revealed his readiness to make personal sacrifices in his commitment to pass the anti-gay bill.
The Speaker of Parliament stated that the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill will be passed this year.
According to Alban Bagbin, it was unconstitutional for former president Akufo-Addo to refuse to assent to the bill.
