President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe has said President John Dramani Mahama should have issued an executive order to stop illegal mining.
According to Franklin Cudjoe, illegal mining is an existential threat to Ghana.
His comments come after there have been reports of ongoing illegal mining activities in the Tano Anwia Forest reserve degrading the forest.
Speaking on JOY FM Super Morning Show, Franklin Cudjoe stated, “I suspect it should be one of the things, probably the first thirty days because this is an existential threat, I know that the minister for Lands and Natural Resources is yet to be vetted but I somehow feel that this should be one of the first orders that he should give even before a minister is in place”.
“At least issue an executive order as Trump has been doing and put people on notice, he said 120 days so let us not rush him but I would have thought one of the very few actions that would have been taken at least sending that signal”, he stated.
Franklin Cudjoe further stated, “So, we must deal with this matter expeditiously. We don’t want to hear that some minister in the last administration told me had’t it not been illegal mining the cedi would have been 25 cedis to a dollar by now, I don’t care. That is a wap way of fighting currency stability”.
“Especially now that we have this unfortunate issue in Obuasi, this should have been an opportunity for President Mahama to put this in motion immediately and issue an executive order that all illegal mining is stopped I think it should come sooner than later”, he added.
